This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.

We present a test for long-term couples who enjoy the horror genre: Settle in with your partner and stream Together. This 2025 indie hit just made its streaming debut via Hulu. On the surface, it might appear like conventional biological terror, but inside Together resides a profound examination about how we choose to love our partners.

A Debut Feature Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together is the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for over ten years. Married in reality in 2017, the two stars infuse a special spark to their characters, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The narrative begins when Millie and Tim transition from the urban environment to the country for professional reasons. A commonly used plot device, of course, but that’s mostly where the cliches cease. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their new home, a tempest descends, and the protagonists discover an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence starts to affect the duo. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a methodically building fright fest, weaving in bits of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but tastefully done) body horror, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes during something disturbing). Shanks skillfully blends these components seamlessly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and far away from his network of friends. He is terrified of the idea of completely losing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is amplified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie avoids making Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

The couple confront the type of challenges that arise in long-term unions after ten years. At their core, they continue to care for one another. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these anxieties of codependency and totally devoting oneself to another person, the allegory avoids being clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that single viewers have seen the movie as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Conversely, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could function as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the ending inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your other half and utter, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can experience right now.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
