The Generosity of Strangers: The Way a Man I Barely Knew Assisted Me Obtain the Role That Transformed My Existence

In the closing decade of the 80s, I was beginning a low-cost journey to Europe with a friend. Since my friend was considering enrolling in graduate studies in NYC, we had planned a 14-day stopover there en route to London.

We arrived at the student accommodation, a large ten-floor structure on the Upper West Side called International House. After dropping our bags, we went directly to the dining hall, where we picked up meals, sat down, and started talking to fellow residents.

Sitting next to me was an individual of Iraqi origin pursuing an engineering degree at a prestigious New York university. He inquired what I did, and I shared that I had just graduated with a degree in science and had been performing experiments involving microscopic analysis.

He pointed out that there was an electron microscope unit at the institution – right next door to the engineering faculty, which was how he knew about it. He suggested that I ought to seek a position with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, saying that I was heading off to Europe and, even more importantly, I lacked a US visa.

The following day I toured the city, going back to the cafeteria that after dark. The man from Iraq walked over to me and told me that he had set up a meeting for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Given that he had gone to the trouble, I attended the interview – but right away told my interviewer that I was without a work permit, so I was unable to accept the role.

As is common in NYC – a city where opportunities abound – she responded: “We'll handle it. What's your start date?” I never got on that flight to London.

I held that position for a trio of years. An advantage of the role was that I got no-cost classes at Columbia, and I took advantage to complete a postgrad program in international relations.

I lost touch with him and I don’t even know his full name, but his selfless gesture altered my destiny in so many ways. I didn't possess the courage or nerve to reach out at an prestigious college and seek a position. Additionally, I had always wanted to pursue education overseas, but could never have afforded it without that free tuition.

What's more, that role at the university resulted in a role in Europe where I encountered my beautiful French husband, with whom I am raising four amazing children. This was a pivotal life event. That benevolent individual set me on a different course in life, and I’m forever grateful.
