The Gaming Giant Hires Popular Battle Royale Developer to Rescue Struggling Hero Shooter Ambitious Title

2K Games has welcomed Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to lead the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently working on the forthcoming over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as this innovative game.

Leadership Shift Follows Lukewarm Response

Brinkman steps into the leadership position at the development studio following the departure of previous head Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to the game's disappointing early showing last fall.

On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer informed staff about this decision through an internal memo, which highlighted that early feedback sessions had revealed the need for a distinct game identity.

Ismailer stated that the developers is now overhauling Project Ethos with a revised focus, aiming to satisfy player expectations.

Trend of Key Hires

The news mirrors a similar action taken by 2K Games in August, when they hired an industry veteran from Blizzard to assist with the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.

Below is the complete text from the president's communication:

Team—

I know you all just completed your gathering - I hope you’re as thrilled as I am with the recent updates. Last time I shared you all a update, I stated the following: “I believe in this group. You all are some of the most driven and talented designers we have had the pleasure to partner with - and we’re eager for that relationship to continue.”

Through your commitment and flexibility, especially over the past twelve months, you continue to prove that.

The player input from last autumn’s Project ETHOS demo was revealing. It confirmed the potential of a action-packed game but made clear we still had improvements to make. It uncovered the requirement for a more distinct vision.

It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve come. You embraced the feedback to mind and revamped Project ETHOS with a refreshed goal - one that’s positioned to deliver on its ambition to our players.

The belief in this project grows every day. To boost the outstanding progress you’ve made, I am thrilled to introduce Ben Brinkman as the incoming Lead of the team. After several months of talks, he starts with us on Monday, October 20.

His leadership and expertise in the PVP shooter space is considerable, having spent the past decade and a half developing and managing some of the most popular titles in gaming, for example the acclaimed shooter, and more recently, the battle royale hit.

I invite you all in receiving Ben in the coming days. We are all eager to keep seeing the development of the game in the weeks to follow.

David

Background of the Incoming Head

Brinkman presently serves in the position of executive producer and production lead at Respawn Entertainment for their flagship title. Brinkman previously worked at Treyarch and Activision in diverse development positions on the Call of Duty games, and, before that, had stints at other industry leaders.

Title Details and Vision

The upcoming game was unveiled in last year together with a public demo. Then, 31st Union presented the game as a "free-to-play, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an thrilling step forward on the category."

"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Customize your character in live gameplay to match your preferred approach," the description reads. "Face the opponents with new abilities, stakes, and tests that change every session. Do you withdraw carefully with your collected items? Or go big, risk it all, and pray your squad can achieve the highest spot? The decision is in your hands."

The game lacks an official launch window or consoles, but fans can anticipate further news as production advances.
